Anyone who planned to visit Moldova or just happen to hang there I recommend to watch this enchanting, small fort had no GEC-layer "i"-mark up till now. For more great photos check your GE Photo-layer! Fort Soroca.kmz (1.26 KB)

That one is interesting and is the second one in Moldova, the other being Bendery Fortress, a demolished site. You can still see the bastions and defense walls.

Hi nightsky and welcome to the GE community! Soroca fort was an accidental find of mine, but looked so cool, I have decided to make it a post here. ... Have you mentioned the other fortress at Bender? How do you mean that is demolished? I mean, obviously it could have been demolished (several times) while was in duty, but today it looks to be a fully renovated museum complex: Bendery Fortress - Historical military memorial complex - exactly. (Just as I have tried a search.) Bendery fortress.kmz (736 B) There was no GEC layer mark on GE so it also did worth a placemark attachment here on board, and as an additional side effect, I had to change thread title as well...! (; Thanks and Best! G

I'll take some time to go through them all, I appreciate the easy links. I have not yet ventured out of Ireland in terms of circles. I'm excited to look through your finds. I'm a part of a group who have compiled over 8000 forts on GE, many with map overlays, and more forts are still being added. I'll be able to post the kmz here once it's released by those creating it, hopefully later this year. Thanks again

Hey folks,
My own research shows there's only 4 forts in all of Moldova. This makes sense when you consider that for most of its history it was just a tiny part of various other countries, and not necessarily a widely contested area. Plus the river is the only real defensive line. Only the Vatican, San Marino, Andorra, and Monaco have fewer fortifications within Europe.
The ones I have are: Orhei Fort (47.309584° 28.973578°); Orhei settlement fort (47.301148° 28.972667°); and the aforementioned Bender/Tighina fortress and Soroca fort.

Hi Jaco!
Nice to see you around!
Thanks for the few forts that were still missing from my lists! (:
Quickly you have put this thread to an end...! (:
At least, collection work is done as it seems - if You say that there are no more forts, then there are no more forts! (;
Best! G
