The Mississippi River Basin Model Waterways Experiment Station is located near Clinton, Mississippi. It's a 200 acre large model of the entire Mississippi River basin and was erect 1943-46 of more then 3,000 German and Italian prisoners-of-war, 1949 ready for use. In 1952, the model successfully predicted which levees would be overtopped in a flood near Council Bluffs and Sioux City, Iowa. The Mississippi Basin model was accurate to within inches of how the river behaved in real life. The model was credited thus saving many hundreds millions of dollars in flood damages. It was in operation 1949 until 1973, then computer models became more accurate and the expensive operation of the model ran out. Today, it is completely derelict.
