After the devastating flooding in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, there was an urgent need to build a pumping station at the end of the 17th Street Canal. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed a temporary pumping station with 33 giant direct drive pumps, which would operate until a permanent pumping facility was completed. It went into operation in 2007 and proved itself during Hurricane Gustav 2008. After the new high-performance pumping system at the end of the canal was completed, it was dismantled again. 30.020744° -90.120848°
