On August 31, 1944 V2 Battery 444 was moved from The Hague to this location. Some sources state that this was done to avoid being cut off if Operation 'Market Garden' suceeded. In the event Market Garden failed and Unit 444 moved back to the Hague to continue the bombardment of London. While at Rijs 66+ V2's were launched at Norwich (numbers vary) which was 292 km to the west. The RAF attacked the site, hidden as usual in a wooded area, one day after 444 had left! An interesting sidenote - one of the launches failed and the missile destroyed the 'Temple of Peace' just a few meters down the Murnserleane from the launch table! The monument was re-built after the war. Rijs V2 launch site - Target Norwich England..kmz (1.68 KB)
