In 1943 the round bunker was built in Sande (Northern Saxony) at the railway station. It offered space for 500 - 600 people and thus belongs to the small bunkers. But it had its own water supply with a deep well (176 meters deep!), toilet facilities and an aeration system. Its dimensions are 18 meters high, 17 meters wide and there were six floors inside. The walls are 2.2 meters thick. After the war, a vulcanization workshop used the interior. In 1947 the English military tried to blow up the bunker. The first conventional blasting attempts had no effect. So the sealed bunker was pumped full of water and hundreds of pounds of explosives. But the blast failed miserably. The water pressure escaped through the sewage system, the bunker itself was not destroyed but only tilted by 18°. Further demolition measures were then refrained from for cost reasons. Today the bunker is owned by the German Alpine Club, which calls this bunker "Monte Pinnow" and uses it as a climbing tower. GM Link
