On December 17, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, soldiers of Kampfgruppe Peiper murdered 84 American prisoners of war in this field. The leader of the SS Gruppe, Joachim Peiper, was tried at the Dachau War Crimes trials in 1946. Peiper was found guilty of the massacre and sentenced to death. This was later commuted to life imprisonment, then to 35 years of imprisonment. He was released from prison in 1956. Peiper was murdered by persons unknown in 1976.
