Very late in WW2 Heisenberg and von Weizsacher (two leading German nuclear physicists) moved their nuclear research from the bombed-out Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Physics in Berlin to a beer cellar under this church in Haigerloch. Due to a combination of mathematical miscalculations and a shortage of both U 235 and heavy water, criticality was never achieved, something the American program succeeded in doing in 1942.
