This mansion was built in 1846. It later became a luxury hotel (The Frythe) which was appropriated by the Department of Military Intelligence in 1939. It became the home of Special Operations Executive (SOE Station IX). Their task was to develop various weapons for the use of saboteurs and agents in occupied Europe. These weapons and devices included:
Welrod - a silenced pistol
Sleeve Gun - a pistol concealed in one's coat sleeve
Welgun - an inexpensive sub-machine gun
Welbike - a smal lmotor scooter for use by paratroopers.
The building is now a luxury block of apartments in a gated community.
