A businessman in Çeşme, İzmir, Turkey, has built a unique 50-metre-long aquarium to function as the boundary wall of his house. It is probably the largest private aquarium and the only one of its kind in the world.
The aquarium is made of special pressure-resistant 5 cm-thick glass and has a depth of 110 cm and a width of 60 cm. It holds about 16,000 to 20,000 litres of water and contains several hundred fish of various types, including sea bream, sea bass, moray fish, octopus, etc. The fish consume about 30 kg of dry food or sardine feed per day. The aquarium is connected to the nearby Aegean Sea by a 400-metre-long underground pipeline so as to circulate fresh seawater in it.
Built in 2005, it has become very famous, and on average, about 3,000 local and foreign tourists come daily to see the aquarium. To provide safety and security, the aquarium is protected by a metallic barrier and is under constant surveillance by security cameras.
