This kofun is also known as:
恵我藻伏岡陵 Ega no Mofushi no Oka Misasagi (used by the Imperial Household Agency)
誉田御廟山古墳 Konda Gobyō Yama Kofun (favored by the archeological community)
It is the second largest kofun (old tomb mound) in Japan. It is second in size only to Daisen Ryō Kofun in Sakai, and is actually somewhat wider. The Imperial Household Agency officially designates it as the tomb of The Emperor Ōjin (応神天皇 Ōjin Tennō), according to the ancient chronicles the 15th emperor of Japan. Ōjin is considered a legendary emperor (meaning there is no contemporary historiography to confirm his actual existence). There is, however, no reason to assume that he did not exist, and some historians regard him as the first historical emperor.
