Here is a small sampling of WW2 radar towers that played a role in the Battle of Britain. Several of them appear in the 1940-1945 (?) photos. This radar system, plus Dowding's air defense plan and Goering's incompetence resulted in a Luftwaffe defeat. The sites generally consisted of three 119 meter steel towers for transmitting the 20-55 mhz pulse while the four wooden receiver towers were 73 meters in height. The system was operational by 1939. The 'Original Twenty' are marked in red, four additions (marked with letters) were made by the summer of 1940. The system had a range of 160 km under ideal conditions. Many more sites were added, especially in the west as the war progressed. WW2 Chain Home radar sites..kmz (7.57 KB)
