Schweinfurt was bombed the the 8th Airforce in an effort to reduce ball bearing production. The raids endured heavy losses as there were no long-range escort fighters at this time. Shelters were put in place before the raids for factory workers and civilians. For excellent photographs of Schweinfurt and the shelters see Geoff Walden's page. ( A-9 is missing from the list, Walden thinks that it was one of three demolished after the war.) Despite this shelter system, over 1000 people were killed by bombing during the war. Many of these were foreign and slave workers.
