Scotch Cap lighthouse was originally constucted in 1903, built of wood. This was upgraded to a concrete structure in 1940. On April 1, 1946 the area was struck by a 8.6 magnitude earthquake and a subsequent tsunami moving at 500 kph and 40 meters in height destroyed the structure and killed the five man crew. A subsequent light house was constructed further inland.
