For thousands of years the aboriginal people in this area used a portage route across the base of the Bruce Peninsula in order to avoid a lengthy (200 km) and hazardous circumnavigation of the peninsula. This 20 km portage is commemorated by a historical marker at Road 13, #3209. From the marker eastward the route has been lost although it did appear on very early maps. Google shows a relatively gentle slope to Colpoys Bay whereas a direct path to Wiarton would encounter impassible cliffs. To the west the route divided into two alternatives - the Rankin and Sauble rivers (red) and Spry Lake (blue). Ancient Portage Route.kmz (4.35 KB)
