Schnellboots (S-Boot) were a heavily armed, very fast (43+ knots) attack craft employed by the Kriegsmarine during WW2. Operating at night, they required covered protection from Allied aircraft attack during daylight hours. To this end shelters were constructed in IJmuiden, Rotterdam, Ostend, Boulogne and Cherbourg. Of these this one in IJmuiden is perhaps the best preserved. This bunker was attacked using 'Disney' bombs late in WW2. This weapon was a rocket-assisted 2000 kg bomb capable penetrating the 5 meter thick roof of the bunker. There are a number of photos of the bunker as well as street view. YouTube has a video of the weapon in use. Schnellboot bunker IJmuiden Holland.kmz (1.09 KB)
