Attachment: PS Waverley.kmz (891 B) The original PS Waverley was built by A&J Inglis on Clydeside in 1899. Operating throughout the Clyde until 1938 the original Waverley was requisitioned at the outbreak of war forming part of the 12th Minesweeping Flotilla operating out of Harwich. Sailing to take part in the evacuation of Dunkirk in May 1940 she was sunk by German bombers while attempting to assist H.M.S. Crested Eagle which had been beached, with the loss of an estimated 350 men. Her replacement, the current PS Waverley was built in 1946 by the same yard and was operated as a Clyde ferry and pleasure steamer until 1974 by Caledonian MacBrayne, when it was decided that her operating costs were too high for a commercial venture. Keen to see her preserved, MacBraynes sold her to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society for the sum of £1.00. Through heroic fund-raising efforts, she was kept afloat and was given a major refit between 2000 and 2003 to restore her to her 1940s trim. No longer confined to the Clyde estuary, she operates in various locations around the UK. and is the last seaworthy ocean-going paddle-steamer in the world.

I served as a crew member on the Waverley from June-August of 1981. That year we were doing week long tours from Glasgow to Ayr and back. Stopping off points included Greenock, Dunoon, Largs & Troon.
It was a great experience for me and one I will never forget. I'll certainly never forget the party we had on board on the day of Charles and Diana's wedding, or the headache the day after.
