Hi everybody,
“Of course there are a lot of (very practical) circle-cities and square or rectangle-cities but there also appear to be more intruiging symbols that inspired city builders.”, I wrote on the old Google Earth Community, when I started the collection ‘symbol cities’. But recent archeological excavations in Italy show that there is more to circular historical city planning! Near the Italian city of Bologna an exeptional excavation uncoverded the remains of “Kainua” (Etruskan for ‘new town’), dating ca. 500 BC.
In the 2022 Arte France documenatary archeologist Elisabetta Govi (Università di Bologna) presents the remains of an ancient planned city that was meant to reflect on earth the celestial sphere with 12 deities situated evenly in a large circle drawn around a cental point. All aligned to the summer solstice (docu 1:15:59) as seen from the acropolis.

When Google discontinued the database connection of the old Google Earth Community all the KLM-files of the collection were lost. I remember that a moderator suggested to bundle al the message threads in one kml file. I wish I had because in my (broken) bookmarks I can see that the oldGEC collection featured:
- the axe man of Utrecht (Utrecht, the Netherlands)
- Leo Belgicus (map)
- Felix the Cat (Lima, Peru)
- head of a horse (Leeuwarden, the Netherlands)
- Kattenbroek (Amersfoort, the Netherlands)
- De groene cathedraal (Almere, the Netherlands)
- the cross of Van Brouchhoven (Leiden, the Netherlands)
- churchcroses/kerkenkruizen/kirchenkreuz : Utrecht, the Netherlands
- Touba Khatim (Islamic and Sufi)
I suppose information about these can be found on Wikipedia these days.
Best regards,
