Just cannot recall... Only that there are more such locations over there...
Could anyone tell, what were these?
The circular holes look very like bomb craters which may help pinpoint the exact location.
I think there were some air attacks on Attu during the battle to retake the island from the Japanese in WW2. The green colour certainly matches current imagery well
Certainly, there are some similar-looking - but - fundementally different - circular hut holes on that island, from 1950s occupation. Near the air base as I recall.
The shallow "hut craters" seen near the 1950s air base on Attu are caused by damage to the delicate subsoil (permafrost on some islands, sub-arrctic subsoil on others)
When clearing and leveling the land for the creation of huts, the unwanted earth was piled up around the edge of the site. This means snow drifts and ice accumulate over the years around these huts, more so than the original terrain.
Over time, the extra ice and water damages the subsoil which waterlogs and tends to destabilise. On Attu, near the old airbase, you can see the 1950s? metal huts in some circles, as well as the rectangular huts more from the 1940s.
However, your circles are small and appear waterlogged in the centre, suggesting bomb or shell craters (from naval gunfire support?) I wonder if they are on Attu but away from the more modern air base - the island saw a lot of action with amphibious landings from different directions. The craters could also be from ordnance disposal at a later date.
I know there was US underground atomic testing in the early 70s on one of the Aleutian islands, though I don't think there was any bombing or shelling tests with that.
My only GE browsing of that area was quite a few years ago to plan an awful ferry flight with a pilot friend but eventually it was cancelled, which pleased me.
