Three RAF stations (Manston, Woodbridge and Carnaby) constructed extra long runways for damaged bombing aircraft returning from operations. These were typically 2700 meters in length (9000 feet) with run-off areas at either end of 460 meters (1500 feet), giving a total length of 3620 meters (12000 feet). Modern views of Manston and Woodbridge still show the original layout: Carnaby does to some degree but the runway has been transformed into an industrial park! (Set time slider to 1945).
