Spain initiated territorial claims on the west coast of North America beginning as early as 1493. This campaign culminated in the explorer Martinez attempting to establish a colony at Yuquot (Friendly Cove) on Vancouver island in 1789. Yuquot was the summer village of the Mowachat aboriginal tribe and this event signified the first European colony in what was to became British Columbia. A colony was established and two forts were built. This rapidly resulted in the seizure of British commercial vessels. Britain and Spain threatened war but cooler heads prevailed and conflict was averted. This confrontation resulted in victory for British Mercantile interests and extension of British expansion in the Pacific. It also signified the end of Spanish influence on the west coast of North America. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuquotvancouverisland.com/plan-your-trip/regions-and-towns/vancouver-island-bc-islands/yuquot-friendly-cove/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nootka_CrisisSpanish Territorial Claims in Canada..kmz (1.6 KB)
