In 1939 Gleiwitz (today Gliwice) was 20 km inside Germany. On the night of August 31, 1939 this station (Sender Gleiwitz) was attacked by what appeared to be Polish Army personnel. A short anti-German message was broadcast. This incident was used by Nazi Germany to justify the attack on Poland (Uberfall auf den Fell Weiss) the next day. In fact the soldiers were Germans dressed in Polish uniforms and carrying Polish equipment. (These may have been supplied by Oskar Schindler). Several murdered prisoners, dressed as Polish Army personnel, were left behind to strengthen the illusion. This was part of 'Operation Himmler' and was the last of a number of similar false flag operations. Today the red-roofed building houses a museum regarding the event. The tower is the tallest wooden tower in Europe. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gleiwitz_incidentWhere WW2 really started..kmz (794 B)
