If you follow this track in either direction it disappears. It seems that equipment is rebuilding the tracks at the end of of the visible dark line. Near the placemark are old abandoned railway cars and if you turn on the pictures layer you can get a ground level look at them. The pictures are a few years old now and the locomotives pictured in them are no longer visible in the default satellite view. Historical imagery goes back to 2003 and they should be visible there but I haven't been able to find them yet. Scrolling from 2003 to the current imagery, it is interesting to see the progress of the new rail bed, Google earth Panoramio pictures layer image by strongp

Cheers, Frank Seeing the route in the transportation layer led me to investigate the old abandoned rolling stock. I never would have guess what this thread would lead to after further investigation. My favorite part of these forums has always been the collaboration, something which was sadly lacking for the past few years.

Greetings and respect for you : Yes I live in Sudan and the City is Shendi is in the River Nile state. As for the Internet used by about 4 million people or more medow, I see you are very close to the amazing Meroe pyramids. We would love to see a post about them, with some history and your own photos. I suggest putting it in the History Illustrated forum. Best regards, Diane Hill, this is an interesting find and I would love to explore all of that equipment, especially the locomotives. Would you say the one pictured is diesel?

If you are referring to the one in the initial post, I would say that is definitely a steam engine with that big boiler up front. There's a guy we both know who works on the railroad with rolling stock like this. I'll be he could say for sure. Where is that masked man anyway?

I'm not a masked man but have worked around enough steam systems in another life to say that the two visible motive units in the OP Photo are definitely steam Locomotives! ...assuredly not diesel/electric! The track north seems possibly viable, just dirt covered. I wonder if they could've towed the locos to Atbara where there seems to be a major railyard. B66
