A building which would be bomb-proof, independent of local power and with sufficient storage for 1000 personnel was first proposed during WW2. The Cold War brought about its construction and it was built by the U.S. military in 1953. This 'village under one roof' was operated by the military until 1966. It was then abandoned and it underwent foreclosure in 2016. It is now owned by the the town of Whittier and is uninhabitable. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckner_BuildingBuckner Building - a Cold War curiosity..kmz (1 KB)
