Early in the course of the Crimean War (October 1853 - February 1854) the Charge of the Light Brigade occurred. This war was obstensibly fought for Christian minorities in Palestine. France, the Ottoman Empire, Great Britain and Sardinia (!?) were arrayed against Russia.
The debacle ensued from poorly articulated orders to attack one of the now-abandoned Turkish redoubts (#1) where the Russians were in the process of removing some captured guns. The Light Brigade would have been ideally suited for such a raid over rough ground. In the event the Brigade mistakenly attacked the wrong target, a Russian artillery battery about 2.8 kilometers to their east on the flat valley floor.
Consequently the cavalry suffered devastating losses from artillery fire from every side. Of the 670+ troopers setting out over 300 men were killed, wounded and captured. Half of the horses were lost.
