Simon Lake (* 1866 † 1945) was an American mechanical engineer and ship technician. He received over two hundred shipbuilding patents and was one of the first to build submarines for the United States Navy. Lake's last submarine, The Explorer, was built in the 1930s and was designed solely for research salvage missions. It was equipped with a basket and mechanical arm for collecting samples, along with a hatch that allowed divers to exit and enter the ship. Explorer could move through open water with a propeller or crawl across the ocean floor on a set of drive wheels. It was connected to a mothership on the surface that provided air and electricity. It is currently on display in the Naval Port in Milford.
