From a camp website: "The Little Mt. Hoffman Lookout is perched on the rim of the largest volcano in the state! You’ll be treated to sweeping views of Mt. Shasta, Mt. Lassen, and southern Oregon's Mt. McLoughlin. Plus, with Medicine Lake nearby there will be plenty of outdoor play time. The lookout has a cozy wood stove, two cots, and a barbecue pit and picnic table outside. Be prepared to bring everything you’ll need, including the whiskey and the marshmallows!" It looks like a heavenly place to camp (see photos on the website), but not this summer. The "Antelope Fire" has destroyed much of the surrounding forest. The lookout was built in 1920 and used until 1978, but is still used by the Forest Service during extreme fire danger. This year would have been one of those times. The Forest Service also rents it for camping, as it does for many campsites on land owned by the federal government. This must be a very popular camp, requiring reservations a long time in advance. Forest Service personnel covered the lighthouse in sheets of metal this summer. It probably survived - there is also a large cleared area around it. See the location for a photo and a 360 view. Little Mt. Hoffman Lookout "is one of the few remaining historic lookouts in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places."
