Four ferry companies have been given licenses to operate between the US and Cuba, opening direct transportation between the two countries for the first time since 1960. That year, a trade embargo was implemented by the US against Cuba. Ferries will not begin operating immediately, but the first stage in the process is complete. Diplomatic ties have already been reinstated, as announced by President Obama in December, 2014. This historic event caused much celebration in Cuba as they anticipated the flow of tourism and trade that will surely follow. The people of Cuba have suffered economically since the US embargo and this worsened after losing financial support of the USSR after its collapse in 1991. The ferries will transport cargo, as well as passengers, but the trip still won't be a simple one. ( Source) They'd better hurry this along, because I want to go see those fabulous old cars and hear some great music. 1958 Ford Edsel "Antique car, Havana, Jan 2014, image by Marjorie Kaufman" Licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 via Wikimedia Commons
