In the early hours of Thursday morning, residents of a condominium tower near Miami, Florida, were awaked by the thundering noise of their condo building collapsing around them. Many did not awake to realize what had happened. The numbers vary by news source, but currently, there appear to be about 159 unaccounted for and likely buried beneath tons of rubble. Their families wait anxiously around the building for news of their rescue or at least identification. Five are confirmed dead and have been identified, 130 other residents are accounted for. Rescue efforts have been made more difficult by a small fire deep within the rubble, but it has been kept under control by firefighters.
Three years prior to the collapse, engineers had reported leaks in the waterproof lining around the swimming pool and damage to the concrete pillars in the garage. The report stated that repairs needed to be done "in the near future."
The "pancake" collapse of the building leaves few breathing spaces for anyone to survive.
