The Boeing B-50 Superfortress( Wiki) is a strategic bomber that was developed from the B-29 after World War II. Originally conceived as the B-29D, the designation was changed to B-50 to avoid the wholesale cancellations of existing aircraft orders following WWII. The type had improved engines, wings, landing gear and tail amongst other things compared to the B-29. Produced from 1947 - 1953, 370 were built. The last of the type were retired in 1965. Of the 370 built, only a handful remain today, none of which are flightworthy. I have 5 in the collection and know of 1 other being restored using C-97 parts. Anyone wishing to see the similarities and differences between the B-29, B-50 and C-97 should check out the collection at Castle AFB, which has 1 of each. As always, any locations of other partial or complete airframes are welcome. Cheers, Sean.
