A large fire in South Africa's tourist metropolis Cape Town has affected considerable areas of the famous Table Mountain. The slopes above Newlands were on fire on Sunday. Late on Sunday afternoon, the fire spread to the university campus and destroyed several buildings and a library with rare and historical books. Hundreds of students living on campus were evacuated, it said. In addition, South Africa's oldest windmill, Mostert‘s Mill, built in 1796, and the popular “Rhodes Memorial” restaurant burned down. More than 120 firefighters and the crews of five helicopters equipped for fire fighting fight the flames. Two firefighters were injured during the operation. Authorities called for the area, which is popular with residents and visitors, to be vacated immediately. The cause of the fire was probably a campfire lit by a homeless persons, it said.
