Also, see this GEC post about the building of the Siam-Burma Railway. The post is mostly restored, but I'm still working on some of the placemarks.

{Spoiler}This wouldn't be complete (I think) without mentioning that the tune the soldiers are whistling marching into the camp at the beginning of the movie (and which is the music theme for the movie) is the Colonel Bogey March. And that during WW2, words were attached to that tune. There are several versions of the lyrics, but usually they go something like this: Hitler has only got one ballGöring has two but very small Himmler is rather sim'lar But poor old Goebbels has no balls at all! I read once that in that scene they were thinking of having the soldiers sing the song, but instead they decided on whistling it. I don't know if it's true.

Great, didn't knew about the lyrics, hahahahaha And yes, it gives a more complete explanation to the puzzle for those who didn't watch that movie. Thanks for mentioning.

Until the pandemic hit, I would go with a group of expat friends every two years to Kanchanaburi and take 3 "party barges" tied together and float down Khwae Yai (River Kwai). The barge boarding area is about 3 km downriver from the current railway bridge, and right next to the auto bridge that crosses the river near the War Cemetery. We went to the new version of the railway bridge a time or two, but entirely too many tourists. However, we often stopped at the War Cemetery to pay respects to the ~7,000 Dutch, British and Australian prisoners of war who died during the railroad construction. A very sobering experience after two days of partying on the river. That stretch of the river has dozens of barges for rent and families and groups of friends will spend a day or two going up and down the river. Some nice seafood places near the barges. A few pictures of one visit. Notice the "convenience store" boat that goes up and down the river, stopping at barges. She has soft drinks, liquor, beer, chips/crisps, cigarettes, candy...a mini 7-11...and she cooks satay, squid, shrimp, etc. on a hibachi to serve hot. Incredible!

Thanks for the colorful memories, it sounds like a trip to Xochimilco times 10 or 50. Indeed the new bridge looks extremely touristy in the SV images. It would be nice if humans could learn how to live with others and cooperate instead of making stupid wars.
