Long-term members of the Google Earth Community will be saddened to learn of the untimely death of Michael T Jones through cancer. Together with Brian McLendon, he co-founded Keyhole in the early 2000s. Keyhole was named after the Keyhole reconnaissance satellites. Michael and Brian invented a way to dynamically piece together data from these satellites and overlay it on a virtual sphere, thereby inventing the Keyhole software platform. Keyhole was bought out by an up-and-coming company called Google, who changed the name of the software to Google Earth.
Over the years, our GEC moderators and admins met Michael many times, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that we developed an enormous respect and affection for this gifted, generous, warm-hearted genius.
RIP, Michael, we'll miss you.

Sad news. His ability and vision literally opened our world to us. What a loss.

Rest in Peace. My condolences to the family.
In my service career I was a workaholic and retirement left a huge void in my life. I was lucky to find GE and GEC and ever since there is never a dull moment. I am grateful to the founders of Keyhole.

The loss of Michael Jones is a terrible blow for those who knew him even slightly, as I did. Many very bright people have come into my life (some of them here!), but I think he was the only true genius I've ever met. At the same time, he was so kind and so interested in people that you could feel completely comfortable in conversation with him. Discovering Google Earth in 2006 was a thrill and opened the world to me in ways I wouldn't have known without it. It is a priceless tool for anyone interested in our planet and its inhabitants. I wish peace to his widow, June, and hope that she finds some comfort in knowing how many lives Michael touched with his remarkable mind. RIP, Michael.

The idea in which he took one of the roles to lead changed a lot. It was not only a software but something touching lifes. What they did caused was the ever first time people all over the world came to the same place with their true identities for something real and it was the Google Earth Community.
Things I learn or research always gain much value and understanding whenever I check them in Google Earth.
Thanks MTJ
