BOMARC (Boeing Michigan Aeronautical Research Center) was a cold war surface to air missile designed to destroy Soviet manned bombers. It was deployed initially around north-east United States (Red) with a second group of sites around the country. (Yellow). The latter group were never completed as, by the late 1950's, it was clear that ICBM's were replacing manned bombers. Test sites are marked in Green.
The placement of the initial sites demonstrates the importance of protecting the north-east of the country.
