Tonight, 1800 people are reported dead. In Kathmandu, many World Heritage temples and other historic buildings are completely destroyed. The earthquake also caused avalanches in the Himalayas and 10 people may have been killed there. "[T]he U.S. Geological Survey calls one of the most seismically hazardous regions on Earth. It is at the spot where the India plate collides with the Eurasia plate in a process that created the towering Himalayas." Source. "Google executive Dan Fredinburg died in the Everest base camp avalanche, while two others suffered non-life-threatening injuries." Source
The Nepalese people are in desperate need of food, water and all other services. Their government has few resources to help them. You can donate HERE

Although one individual among thousands who have lost their lives, this is very sad news and my heart goes out to his family and friends. Here's a tribute to Dan, from Carole Cadwalladr who trekked with him to the Everest base camp... RIP Dan Fredinburg. Google's Dan Fredinburg was 'charismatic and always the centre of attention'

"NASA and its partners are gathering the best available science and information on the April 25, 2015, magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Nepal, referred to as the Gorkha earthquake, to assist in relief and humanitarian operations. Organizations using these NASA data products and analyses include the U.S. Geological Survey, United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance, World Bank, American Red Cross, and the United Nations Children's Fund. NASA and its collaborators are pulling optical and radar satellite data from international and domestic partners and compiling them into a variety of products. The products include “vulnerability maps,” used to determine risks that may be present; and “damage proxy maps,” used to determine the type and extent of existing damage. Such products can be used to better direct response efforts." LINK

Look at the walls going down this ally and further on into the rubble area The Support beams look as though they were holding up walls that have been damaged before.

I've been participating in the Tomnod crowd sourcing effort supporting the Nepal relief effort, but the process seems a little disorganized with little "imagery functionality" provided to the participants. As a former professional Imagery Analyst with the NGA I would like to see capability in the Tomnod site of roaming, zooming, imagery enhancement, historical comparison, geo-location data, etc. Maybe even an integration of the Tomnod function with Google Earth. Just a thought.

Yes, I've been doing a bit on Nepal with Tomnod as well - it seems a good thing to do if you have a spare half an hour here and there. I completely agree with you re the enhancements needed, and I've no doubt they will come in time if the will and the money are there. Google aren't short of a buck or two and it's taken upward of 10 years to reach our present stage in imagery and to build a historical imagery library. Perhaps the Skybox system will be a step forward in this area with near real-time imagery.Cheers, Frank

Apparently the quake lasted 30-40 seconds, a long time for people already traumatized. The quake was about 15 kilometers (9 miles) deep, four confirmed dead so far. CNN

The death toll is rising hourly after the second quake and as of this writing is 48 in Nepal and 17 in India. The first quake has taken more than 8,000 lives after the quake three weeks ago. Also, a US Marine helicopter that was making supply deliveries to outlying villages has disappeared. Eight were on board. Hundreds of Nepali troops are searching for it. The last communication was about fuel problems. Source
