I am totally confused about duplicating the posts from Old GEC to New GEC.
If the oGEC is not being killed and is being Frozen only, then why the Admins/Mods of nGEC are asking us to repost our old posts in nGEC?
If oGEC is being frozen only then the old posts which need update/revision can be gradually reposted but I sense an urgency in the tone of the messages and would like to know why this is urgent and or important to repost in the nGEC?
Though Google Craig had very clearly said that in oGEC that; "We have not set a date, nor do we see a reason to remove the GEC, but will retain the option if it’s ever needed." I would still like to have some assuring words on this. I have about 300 non F&G posts in oGEC and am worried.

Hi, CJM, I don't know the definitive answer (if there is one), but I'm only transferring my favorite ones just because it's too much work to do all of them. But, to be on the safe side, I'm at least trying to make sure I've got most kmls on my hard drive and that I've copy/pasted the text to my GDrive documents. That way, I can re-build posts when I feel like it, if the oGEC ever completely disappears. Honestly, though, I probably won't have the time or motivation to re-post many of them. There is also the problem of having so many broken links, which I don't want to deal with for the very old posts.
What's everyone else doing?

Downloading KML's that I may want to refer to at a later date. But I am sure that we have plenty of time to extract what we want.

Thanks Diane.
I have started copying the posts into an html editor which keeps the links and images intact. I am also downloading kmz.
My only worry was a close deadline. This month my hands are all full in many things. I have about 300 non F&G Posts. Luckily from Jan 2009 I started my blog also so I have a sort of back up for the posts from this date. I am more worried about the posts from 2007 to 2009 as well as kmz files. Lets see how much I can copy.

Hi, Jamal,
The only urgency is for those people who wish to check their oGEC posts for broken links etc and get them in as good a state as possible for the last scrape of the old GEC. If you're not worried about that, then there's no urgency at the moment.
Cheers,
Frank

I agree about there being no urgency to copy posts. Google has a huge number of servers and the one(s) used to archive the oGEC are not going to concern them. So unless the server breaks or someone trips over the cord and unplugs it, I believe the archive will last for a long time. My one concern is if there is a back-up but I would think Google backs up everything.
My particular reason for duplicating good old material here is to help create a base of interesting things for new members to find. If we just had opened up the nGEC with no content my guess is our growth would be about zero. Right now the growth is slow but steady, even drawing old members who had given up on the oGEC as well as new members. I'll continue to work on redoing old posts, mine and other oldies but goodies, to keep increasing interesting content here.

Thanks Frank and Hill for reassuring words. Actually I was trying to post as many new posts as possible in oGEC so as get placemarkers in the last scrape before oGEC freezes. I am parallely sharing these in nGEC and will continue to it. I probably misunderstood and wrongly sensed urgency to copy from oGEC to nGEC. With the reassuring words I will devote full time to creating/updating posts and share these at both places. The nGEC is as dear to me as is oGEC.
