Hey guys,
I have been using GE already for quite some time, but arguably my biggest project is tracking my personal movements around the world. This is apparently a very private project, but nevertheless I want to share some of it with you (although with only one example kmz). Maybe someone is doing similar tracking or has suggestions or advice.
It all started in between Christmas and New Years 2009 on a trip to Poland (Berlin, Legnica, Wroclaw, Oswiecim, Krakow, Warszawa and back). Returning home I marked the roads and rails I have taken during the trip and over the following months I continued to do that with all my movements (not within cities, though).
10 years later I have a heavy kmz database (slowing down my browsing if I activate it). I have always clicked my way along roads and rails and have never used a GPS tracking device. In case I took certain journeys twice, I copied/pasted it. All trips are named and sorted by date and the different modes of transportation (vehicle, rail, plane, bike, walk) have different colours. The side bar looks like this:
--------------------------------------------------------------------- example screeshots -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Roads (black) and rails (yellow) travelled between 2010 and 2020 in Europe
2) Roads (black) and rails (yellow) travelled between 2010 and 2020 in Central Europe
3) Frequency of rail travel in Germany (the thicker the line, the more travelled)
For your understanding:
- I grew up in Berlin and studied in Leipzig and Gothenburg (Sweden)
- worked and had internships in Bonn, Frankfurt and Munich
- lines were increased by 0,5 points every journey
4) Spending nights in these locations in Europe
- placemarks are precicely on the building
- without Alpine mountain huts
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The attached kmz-file is an example of a journey I took to participate in a friend's wedding in Varna, Bulgaria. As I didn't want to fly and explore some new places during the trip, I decided to take a nice rail journey.
It included four night trains:
Szczecin - Prezmysl
Lviv - Solotvino
Sighetu Marmatiei - Bucuresti
Bucuresti - Wien
Greetings to everyone and stay safe during these days.
