UPRR Round House Former Site: A Boyhood Memory

I have no excuse for reposting this placemark. I made it back in 2007 for Stimpy622 to add to his collection, because in the map of the tiny world of my child's brain, the structure was one of the most impressive landmarks. I often walked past it on my way to our family's church, and even after steam was replaced with diesel and the UPRR shops were closed, it continued to loom huge and vacant for many years.

I gussied it up a bit, back in 2012, while I was waiting to Google Groups to get going, but haven't done any revision since then, and moving it over here it can be just another one of my posts for people not to read.

If nothing else, the picture above can give a hit to the answer to the trivia question I posed in my post on the Ume Koji Steam Locomotive Museum.

Here's a bit of trivia: I grew up in America across the street from a major rail line in the last days of steam. I saw many types of steam locomotives, the large ones that powered the frequent passenger and freight trains, booster engines that helped power the trains to the highest point on the line, switch engines that assembled and disassembled freight trains and kept overnight visitors awake at night, and even a narrow gauge engine that carried logs alongside the regular line. None of the locomotives at Ume Kōji are equipped with a device that was installed on many of the engines of my memory. What is it? Hint: It is said to have been the brainchild of "the father of the computer."
