On 29 November, 1944, U-1230 disembarked two German spies (Gimpel & Colepaugh) on Sunset Ledge. Their mission was to gather technical information on the American war effort for transmission back to Germany.
They hiked 6 km up Point Road to U.S.1 where they caught a cab to Bangor and then a train New York city. They had already attracted attention because of their clothing, inappropriate for November in Maine.
After living the high life for a month they were apprehended, tried and sentenced to death. No information was sent back to Germany. President Truman later commuted the sentences and the would-be spies survived WW2. Operation 'Magpie' was an abject failure.
