This series of fortifications, known as the 'Oder-Warthe-Bogen-Arch, was begun in 1934 and construction continued until 1944. It consists of over 100 defense structures (many of which are interconnected by tunnels) and resulted in the most technically advanced defenses of Nazi Germany. Electric railways were used to move munitions and troops. Hitler visited the site in 1935. Today it remains as one of the most interesting and largest military sites open to the public. The offensive of the Soviet Army managed to pierce the defense line in three days of fighting in January, 1945. The troops had only 130 km. to cover before reaching Berlin to the west. Few of the structures are visible on Google Earth; fortunately there are photographs of the majority of the works. Today the complex is a tourist attraction; one is able to walk or ride bicycles in the tunnels. The tunnels are Europe's largest bat refuge! Notes: The locations of tunnels are not exact but are intended to demonstraate the extent of the complex. Pz.W. is equivalent to PanzerWerk or strong-point. MGu Pak nnn seems to be a two level shelter, perhaps with an anti-tank gun? MGu St u Pak u nnn remains a mystery. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festungsfront_Oder-Warthe-BogenOstwall- Nazi Germanys Maginot line..kmz (11.58 KB)
