During WW2 Nazi Germany found itself at a disadvantage in terms of weather forcasting due to the fact that weather systems generally move West to East. The Allies thus had the advantage of forcasting. In order to remedy this, the Germans installed automatic weather station 'Kurt' in Labrador, Dominion of Newfoundland. This entailed an armed invasion of North America, delivered by U-boat 537 in October, 1943. The station was designed to operate for 6 months powered by battery packs. In the event it transmitted only for one month. It's failure remains a mystery. The station remains were discovered in 1977 and now reside in the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa, Ontario. I believe that I have located the positions of the station and U-537 fairly accurately based on contemporaneous photographs and historical measurements. It should be noted that Nazi Germany emplaced at least 14 other weather stations around the Barents Sea, Greenland, Bear Island, Spitzbergen and Franz Josef Land.
