For less than three years Shōin Yoshida operated a two-room school in a remote corner of Japan. His teaching methods were unconventional, for his own time and for ours, but his influence was far reaching. Thirty-two of his some 80 students were involved in the overthrow of the Tokugawa shogunate, and the 16 of those who survived the revolution were part of the Emperor Meiji's new government. I decided to post these placemarks when I discovered that his school, Shōka Sonjuku, as well as the nearby Hagi Castle, were available in Google Street View tours.
