The United States Civil War (1861-1865) classically and literally pitted "Brother Against Brother" in mortal combat. Nothing similar would happen in the western world until July, 1940, when, six months into World War II, the Royal Navy fired upon the French Navy, in a "Friend Against Friend" event…..controversial to this day!!
In a note attached to his orders to Admiral James_Somerville, Winston Churchill wrote:
"You are charged with one of the most disagreeable tasks that a British Admiral has ever been faced with, but we have complete confidence in you and rely on you to carry it out relentlessly"
