chunks of ice (or bars of toughened snow if it were quite not the same) were fallen off the verge. the smaller was already there in 2009, slightly visible in 2010 and in 2011; the bigger one, the "monolith" arrives. if you zoom in on GE, also their paths are visible so as approx. direction of their fall and slide can be drawn: before (the small one's path): after (the big one has arrived): water -after freeze- seems to love regular shapes; just think of perfect geometry of snow crystals, or: not long ago I have seen some nasa report on a shockingly regular rectangle shaped iceberg: article from source: earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/92937/a-neat-slice-of-ice-in-antarctica
