Centurion tank Mk III - Type K #169041 is now the gate guardian of Robertson Barracks, NT, Australia. In October 1953 she was exposed to an atomic detonation at Emu Field SA in the course of nuclear tests conducted by the British. She was parked only 320 meters from a tower shot. Fully loaded and equipped before the blast, she suffered superficial damage but was drivable after the detonation. ( It was judged that the crew would have died in the blast.) Unbelievably 169041 went on to serve in Vietnam where she took a hit from an RPG. The crew survived and she was eventually put back into service in Australia. She is now known as 'The Atomic Tank'. Mark Felton has produced an excellent video on this tank's history. Further information on 169041: www.raeme.info/opse746.phpThe Atomic Tank.kmz (1.3 KB)
