The Deadly Green Swamp.kmz (1.44 KB) The Green Swamp in North Carolina is home to at least 14 different species of the world's carnivorous plants. The famous Venus Flytrap, Sundew, and Pitcher plants all live here. Indeed, the Venus Flytrap is indigenous only to these wetlands in North and South Carolina. The Venus Flytrap, (Dionaea muscipula), Venus Flytrap leaf Venus Flytraps are only native to North and South Carolina. Sundew, (Drosera) The Sundew attracts insects with its sticky, sweet secretions. Pitcher plants (above) attract insects with their liquid nectar. Once an insect falls into the trap, specially adapted slippery hairs prevents insects from crawling out - there is no escape - while they are slowly digested by the Pitcher's secreted enzymes. Most carnivourous plants rely on their sweet nectar which is produced to lure insects into their deadly traps. This makes them one of the most fascinating, unique and ingenious plant species in the world. These plants have always reminded me of the classic John Wyndham book - 'The Day Of The Triffids' Green Swamp Preserve

For a period in the early '70s we could buy a flytrap in variety stores or nurseries...then kill it within a few days because we had no idea how to care for it and there were no instructions. It was a novelty that wore off quickly. Best to leave them in nature! Nice post, Groovy.
