Since 1946, the Royal Army operates in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, the Defense Animal Center (DAC) and trained there in particular dog for military use. HM Prison Service, the HM Revenue and Customs and other UK and foreign government agencies including Irish Customs are represented. The focus is on detection dogs for drugs, bombs and their fragments and the detection of TNT, C-4, Semtex and Cordtex. 300 dogs per year are trained and also sold worldwide. Horses are in the facility as well as an extensive veterinary clinic. A senior home for disused animal soldiers is not missing.
