This is the ghost town on Pyramiden, a abandoned and uninhabited Soviet-Russian mining village on Spitsbergen with formerly over 1000 inhabitants. As a signatory state to the Spitsbergen Treaty of 1920, the Soviet Union also had the right to mine raw materials on the Norwegian archipelago. The Russian government decided in 1998 to shut down coal mining in Pyramids completely because it was no longer profitable and in October, the city was abandoned more or less hastily. Many of the buildings were not even ten years old at that time, as was invested until shortly before the abandonment of the city much. In 2000, the last inhabitants had left the settlement and pyramids has since been depopulated. Every summer since about 2007, a handful of workers are working in pyramids to prevent the disintegration of the city and to clean it up locally. They live in the old hotel, which has meanwhile been reopened for tourists. 78°39'22.37" N 16°18'40.30" O
