A strange belching and gurgling from the depths of the earth can be heard in Fiorano Modenese, in the province of Modena (Italy).
Tucked amongst rolling hills, the area known as "Salse di Nirano" is famous for its eruptive Salse or Mud Volcanoes.
Born from the area's clay subsoil, with a continuous supply of mud replenished by local rainfall and runoff, paired with methane gas forcefully expelled from below the ground by the Earth's geological forces. The feature and area 's name of "salse" refers to the presence (albeit minute) of salt from the materials ejected from the volcanoes themselves.
