During WW2 there was a military airfield in Vicenza (Italy), which was heavily bombed by Allied forces towards the end of the war. As the US troops approached, the Italians buried mines on the grass runway. After the war cows grazed on the site, a new airfield was built west of the old site. But this is already history again. The US Army Camp Ederle can now be found there. New buildings are to be erected on the site of the old military airfield. For this purpose, extensive excavations were carried out on unexploded ordnance and undiscovered mines. Especially a not detonated 4000-pound blockbuster bomb brought big problems. The defusing proved difficult, so that a huge protective wall of sandbags was built. But the Italian ordnance service succeeded in destroying the bomb. Now the empty shell can be seen in the local museum. The bomb are in the wooden sarkophag Pictures: Public domain; Paolo Bovo Attachments:Vicenza.kmz (679 B)
