The need for expanded shipping facilities led to the dredging of a canal through the marshland between Oakland and Alameda in 1902, turning Alameda into an island. Most of the soil from the canal was used to fill in nearby marshland. By 1915, the marshes surrounding San Francisci had yet to be filled in. The map shows Buena Vista Island without Treasure Island, which would be added in 1939. “Berkeley, California,” Chamber of Commerce Brochure (ca.1915), Sarah Wikander collection.
